Legend has it that once, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati put forth a challenge in front of Lord Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya. The task was to circle the world thrice and whoever completed it first would receive the fruit of knowledge. Lord Kartikeya, having a peacock as his vehicle immediately flew away. Lord Ganesha, however, could not do the same on his vahana- a mouse. He hence circled around his parents thrice saying his world lies at their feet, thereby winning the challenge. Carved to perfection, this blackstone sculpture is a testimony to the skills of artisans who keep traditional art alive to date. Depicted here in this white sandstone sculpture is Lord Buddha performing the Abhaya Mudra which literally translates to a hand gesture that portrays fearlessness. It is believed that this is the mudra that the Lord first displayed after attaining enlightenment. It is performed by holding one hand up with the elbow bent and palm facing outward while the other hand rests on the lap. This conveys a sense of peace and security as the hands are empty, devoid of any weapons. Intricately designed and carved, this idol when placed in the entrance hall may ward off any evil.
