Lord Ganesha is revered in Hindu religion as the God of wisdom. The story of how he came to be called so is an interesting one. Legend has it that once, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati put forth a challenge in front of Lord Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya. The task was to circle the world thrice and whoever completed it first would receive the fruit of knowledge. Lord Kartikeya, having a peacock as his vehicle immediately flew away. Lord Ganesha, however, could not do the same on his vahana- a mouse. He hence circled around his parents thrice saying his world lies at their feet, thereby winning the challenge.
